Beat The Street Game

Beat the Street stock market gameBeat the Street stock market trader’s game from TheStreet.com begins this week, with new rules and weekly prizes.

You can create a new portfolio each Friday for 12 weeks at 5:00 PM ET through Monday at 9:29 AM ET beginning April 4, 2008.

Participants are provided with a fictional account, two hundred fifty thousand ($250,000) fictional U.S. dollars and the fictional ability to select five (5) individual stocks from the NYSE, NASDAQ and/or AMEX exchanges (individual stocks traded on OTC and other exchanges do not qualify as valid portfolio selections) to create a portfolio. Fictional dollars will be applied in equal amounts against the 5 individual stocks selected. Read “How to Play” for detailed information.

There are 12 prizes available (one for each weekly Game): $5,000 (awarded as a check). The first game starts Monday, so if you’re interested, hurry to get your picks in by this weekend.

Let’s hope my results aren’t also fictional. See you in the winner’s circle.

Okay.. before you join the game, here are some things that I’ve experienced the first week.

    1. When initially signing-up to play, I was asked if I would like to receive various newsletter emails. I declined to receive ALL such emails, but they are cluttering-up my mailbox anyway.

** If you decide to join, make sure to use an email account in which you won’t mind a large amount of spam. **

    2. Keep track of your own portfolio in another place. After Friday afternoon, your portfolio gets wiped-out and you won’t be able to see your total weekly results.

I didn’t do to well the first week. Unfortunately, I didn’t keep track of my portfolio elsewhere, so I don’t know my total performance for the week.

So, I’ll post my weekly picks here for everyone to judge. Here’s next week’s picks:

    CALM - Short
    HOG - Short
    LDG - Short
    DUK - Long
    ELN - Short

Earnings season is upon us and I’m expected poor results, so most of my picks are short. My opinion is that next week’s market results will be like this week’s past results… in the RED.

Utilities were one of the few sectors that were in the black this past week, so I’m picking DUK as my only long.

Congratulations to RUDEGAL who won the first week’s $5000.00 prize.

Could I do any worse? Only once during this contest have I been in the black. But, what the heck.. it’s free, and if you don’t play, you can’t win.

    Here’s this week’s picks:

    BID - Long
    MFW - Long
    JCP - Short
    ANF - Short
    FSLR - Short
